PRESS RELEASE 11th June 2010

‘GLEDHOLT’  INVITE YOU TO JOIN THEM!

Following their highly successful Music Festival and Gala Concert on May 22nd , which celebrated their 60th Anniversary, the Chairman of Gledholt Male Voice Choir, Raj Beadle says “We were delighted to have gained the support of so many local musical groups at our Music Festival in our aim to take music to the community. The local shop owners were very pleased to welcome us and we thank them for their assistance in providing changing facilities, plus tables and chairs. We were very lucky with the weather and we hope to continue the event next year. Last year we were able to donate over £3,000 for charity and we hope to continue that during this year.

The choir is holding an Open Rehearsal on Tuesday, 29th June at 7.30 p.m. at Lindley Methodist Church Centre to encourage new recruits to experience the very pleasant and healthy pastime of singing.  No previous choral singing required!

Existing members come from not only Huddersfield, but Mirfield, Brighouse and as far away as Selby to rehearsals on Tuesday evenings.  Although the choir’s foundation was at Gledholt Methodist Church, the choir now have members of various denominations and all are welcome!

The men of ‘Gledholt’ also enjoy many social activities and are keenly supported by their ‘ladies’. In addition to local venues the choir travels to various parts of the country, such as the Yorkshire Dales and Wales and hope to visit Cornwall next year.  Three highly successful exchange visits to France to provide concerts have also been enjoyed.

With a repertoire from Tom Jones to Bach, from Dvorak to Martin Shaw – the choir performs a variety of music.  Gentlemen with an interest in choral singing are warmly invited to come along and try the ‘Gledholt experience’ for themselves.

Notes to the Editor :

  • Gledholt Male Voice Choir was formed in 1948, when a group of men belonging to Gledholt Methodist Church formed a double male quartet under the leadership of Joe Ripley and with Marcus Draper as the pianist to sing at local churches, old people's homes, hospitals, etc. Gradually the original double quartet expanded to become, first the Gledholt Glee Singers, next the Ripley Singers for two years, and finally the Gledholt Male Voice Choir. Gledholt Male Voice Choir is one of the leading choirs in Huddersfield and is directed by Susan Wilkinson and accompanied by John Bailey.
