Gledholt Male Voice Choir - raising money for the community
Music Festival 2009

In May last year we organised an informal Music Festival, which took place in Huddersfield Town Centre during the morning of the day of our Annual Gala Concert. Our object was to raise money for charity and the charity that we chose was Classic FM’s own charity – Music Makers. Thanks to the efforts of the groups who took part in the Festival, the support of Classic FM and, of course, our own choir members we raised almost £3,000.

The experience that we gained last year has given us a clearer idea of what can be achieved and so this year, we are going to work with Classic FM again, and the money that we raise will be split between Classic FM Music Makers charity and The Holly Bank, a local organisation which provides long term help to children with special needs. Our aim is to raise £10,000 towards the two charities.

Holly Bank’s Vision Project will provide activities for adults within Holly Bank. Music is essential to this project because it connects people so that they can express themselves and communicate through this medium; for some people music is their first language.

The project will provide facilities, which will enable the people at Holly Bank to explore the world of sound and music, to grow as individuals and to help them play, compose and enjoy music making. It will also widen the scope of their contact with other organisations; the Trust has partnerships with local high schools, universities, bands and musicians who share the enjoyment of music making. The money that we intend to raise in conjunction with Classic FM will help the Trust to provide the following facilities:

  • a CD Library, Music, Talking Books, Sounds
  • a Bank of Instruments
  • live performances by musicians at Holly Bank
  • Music Workshops These facilities will require a great deal of sophisticated equipment and while we cannot aspire to provide it all we hope that our efforts will make a difference. However, in order to achieve our objective, we need a little help; we are not asking for money; all we are asking is for you to do what you do well. Sing or make music, for 15 minutes to half an hour, in Huddersfield Town Centre, during Saturday morning of the 9th May 2009.
