We hosted a brand new Music Festival in the Huddersfield Town Centre, on the 10th of May 2008, to coincide with our Annual Gala Concert at the Town Hall. It was a successful day of music making.
The festival included day time events outside the Parish church and a coffee morning and community singing in the Hudderfield Mission Hall. Choirs included Longroyd Junior school, ably assisted by Jill Lambert and the Parish church choir. The community singing was led by Suzannah Stalmach. The Gala Concert in the evening, in the Town Hall, was aimed at encouraging young musical talent. The Huddersfield Junior Choirs, a group of 70 young people, under the leadership of Susan Wilkinson, a well known music educationist in the country performed with the Gledholt Male Voice Choir. They were joined by the Kirklees Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by another well known and respected musical director, Thom Meredith.
We raised £2750 for the chairty. The money was raised through a combination of collections throughout the festival, ticket sales for the Gala Concert as well as an evening dinner. The festival epitomised the work of Classic FM Music Makers, bringing together a mix of musicians performing for the community. Here our chairman Raj Beadle is seen handing over the cheque to Hayley Westenra, the charity's first Ambassador.
